Pros

it pays slightly better than donating your blood. the hourly wage is on the low end of ok. it can serve as an after school job for high school students. for a less than serious first job, it might be a fine option.

Cons

the real problem with the pay is that the place is only open for 20 hours a week, so your hours will be less than that. depending on your commute, it is possible to end up losing money working here, particularly since management sees absolutely no problem with randomly changing which center you work at without notice or consent. naturally since these are part-time hours there are absolutely no benefits. 'The Mathnasium Way' is mostly nonsense, and appears to be basically non-existent after about pre-Algebra, at which point it's literally just a partial rehash of any standard textbook. I suspect this is related to the fact that nobody in a position to make decisions can actually do math at or above this level, and only about half of the instructors can either. it can serve as an after school job for high school students. if schools aren't teaching well enough to keep students from needing tutoring in the first place, how could students from those same schools possibly stand any chance of teaching it better? like most tutoring services, Mathnasium's only real impact on students is that it gets them to spend more time with math. the instruction isn't any better, there's just more of it than one can get in a classroom alone. the simple fact that the only common thread between all of Mathnasium's competitors is that they give students more time with math should make it plain how true this is. students who aren't massively behind in school spend a lot of their time taking tests, because the curriculum is poorly organized and the grading structure is barely functional, so a lot of time is wasted constantly adjusting what level the student is at instead of actually teaching them anything. whatever advancement they're making, they would make anyway. the computers are so unreliable that a paper note taking system was invented to minimize using them. this ends up being so slow that there is scheduled down time for every instructor to complete notes. meaning that in a 4 hour shift you're expected to take about 1 hour just to complete notes. this becomes a problem because of the next issue. the student to instructor ratio that is most often reported to parents is 3:1, but all sessions are walk-ins, so that's completely ridiculous, and staffing is based on some algorithm that thinks that one instructor having 8 or more students at once for 2 hours straight does not warrant scheduling more instructors. I did this 5 days a week for 2 months straight, with the owner witnessing it in person twice, once for a hour when I had 17 students, nobody else was staffed at all, and the owner only stepped in to help with 3 of them after one student announced out loud how many people were there. so in practice the ratio is often well over the claimed cap of 4:1, and centers which aren't constantly over that cap are considered to be underperforming. other than money and asserting authority over petty issues, I have absolutely no clue what the values of this company could possibly be. I know how many students per day paid my wages, and I know how many I worked with on average. one of the deciding factors in leaving this place was how small that first number was. I could literally go off on my own, using the same billing structure, and replace my wages from Mathnasium with a number of students that a shop teacher with missing fingers could count on one hand.

Pros

Flexible hours that I could choose, nice working space. My boss was nice and very reasonable. Pay was decent after I completed some certifications. When the teaching was effective it was pretty rewarding and it can be fun to talk to the kids.

Cons

It was honestly a very tiring job. The kids can get really rowdy and difficult to manage, especially if you have to teach three at the same time. Management required us to use tablets and a finicky platform for worksheets that was not helpful and forced me to further split my attention.
