Pros
Good place to gain experience as a new grad bc it’s so busy, you gain skills and get desensitized to overwhelm.
Good teamwork among RNs and techs. Doctors are competent, care about patients and are easy to work with.
Pt population is largely Latino, good place to practice/ improve medical Spanish
Cons
Pay is bare minimum, they’d rather keep training new grads that stay 1yr than pay RNs competitively to keep experienced staff
Our ED techs work so hard and are so skilled 17$/hr is insulting compensation for what they do.
34$ per hr for a new grad RN is not a decent nursing wage in 2025. If you interview negotiate up for a decent starting wage that accounts for inflation.
The ED is relentlessly busy. It is too small for the patient volume/ population it serves. Legally required breaks are not prioritized or guaranteed for RNs
