Overall Review:
Based on my experience, this was a difficult and poorly managed work environment. I joined expecting a collaborative and supportive culture given the company’s small size and founder led structure. While the role provided learning experience, the environment itself lacked organization, support, and clear expectations.
This position clarified what I do not want in a workplace.
Part time employees are frequently treated as if they are on call. I experienced multiple instances of being asked to work with less than 24hr notice. Availability that was clearly communicated during the hiring process, including conflicts with other employment, was often overlooked.
Work life balance is minimal. Employees are expected to respond to messages outside of scheduled work hours, including on days off and during breaks. Management primarily uses informal messaging platforms, which often resulted in multiple messages sent within short timeframes during off hours. Failure to respond led to an in-person meeting reiterating that communication was required regardless of scheduled work time. This expectation is especially unreasonable for part time roles.
Training is inconsistent and, in some cases, absent. Employees are routinely expected to complete tasks without adequate instruction. When initial training is incomplete, it is the employee’s responsibility to request additional support. There is no formal process to assess training effectiveness or confirm understanding. Important information and task requirements are often communicated at the last minute and labeled as priority, even when the employee has not previously performed the task.
Compensation did not align with the workload, level of responsibility, or urgency expected in the role. While pay was not the primary issue, it contributed to the overall lack of sustainability of the position.
Some departments function more effectively, largely due to individual employees. Whether this environment is tolerable depends on one’s ability to operate with minimal guidance, unclear priorities, and sustained pressure. Based on my experience, I would not recommend working here.
The off-boarding process was also heavily disorganized and poorly managed.
