Pros
If you get on the right team, there's some interesting work happening in systems integration and modernization. I had good opportunities to pick up new skills.
Cons
Without going into too much detail, I informed HR of misbehavior by my manager. The manager was asked about it by HR (I was present) and claimed to not remember. As far as I saw, nothing else was done. Some time later I was fired out of the blue, supposedly for doing the same thing I had reported about my manager. HR clearly picked a side and I didn't have documentation to challenge it legally, so there wasn't much I could do. This is just one example but it's part of an overall poisonous workplace culture. There are managers and directors who regularly play favorites and feud with each other through back channels. Several have worked together at previous employers and were handpicked by their patrons for their current jobs. Evaluations and reviews are top-down only and the supervisor always gets the last word. This kind of arbitrary leadership extends to strategic planning too. There's the appearance of a lot of process and deliberation at the top but the output is mostly presentation slides with few actual measurable goals. Projects are planned around big, splashy ideas with little attention to how things will be maintained after they're released. "Gartner" is often invoked like a magic spell to justify decisions and then ignored when not convenient. Retrospectives of past projects are non-existent, goals are often quietly rewritten to fit whatever got done, and little is ever learned. There are plenty of good people and good leaders here but the bad ones have most of the power and no system exists to hold them accountable. If you choose to walk into this, think of it like a boxing ring and protect yourself at all times. Keep notes, record conversations, and research employment law in advance.
