Pros

Exciting time to be here with an inspiring, new mission. Lots of room for professional growth, talented colleagues, and accessible leadership. Company has had ups and downs in recent years, but its best days are ahead if it can achieve its goals.

Cons

Exposed to uncertainty in the overall media industry and normal issues for a smaller company.

Pros

Nice iced/nitro coffee tap Lunch on Wednesdays

Cons

Everything else Company recently had to re-organize for a third time after years of persistent failure. The CEO Alex made a bunch of money off of an app and thought he could take that money and make a ton more starting a news network despite knowing nothing about news. He figured that since Fox and CNN are biased he could build a brand off of enlightened centrism. However, it turns out that a model that prioritizes profit at all costs is bound to failure. IJR first ran into issues several years ago after picking up a conspiracy theorist who had been fired from Buzzfeed. Since all the company cared about was finding ways to garnish clicks they wound up allowing the publishing of some crackpot nonsense about Barack Obama which seriously damaged their reputation. The author of that particular work was fired but little changed in the company. The model is fundamentally flawed in the first place. This lead to IJR recently having to lay off almost all of their employees (which they notably refused to notify suspicious employees in advance/answer their questions). It is my view that the company lacks a clear moral compass and will continue to struggle due to a general disregard for what employees think or a clear mission predicated in something other than profit. Last I checked this organization did have some potential and with some changes could treat their employees correctly and change their engagement towards journalism to one that is actually meaningful, impactful, and unique. That said I don't think Alex is willing or able to implement these changes and I left personally unoptimistic regarding the companies future. Work for them at your own risk. Most folks I met were not pleased.
