Lavish perks spoiled by mean, angry management - Developer Indeed Employee Review

Pros

Unlimited vacation, liberal work from home, plush offices. Indeed presents itself to employees as extremely employee-friendly and devoted to good deeds. There's lots of woke rhetoric about diversity and inclusion, too. The free food at the Austin (Champions building) office is absolutely spectacular, like living in a Las Vegas buffet restaurant. The building is full of lounges, sofas, rec rooms, etc. They even have vending machines that dispense computer accessories for free. The location is terrible, scenic but far from town with no parking for miles and absolutely unreachable by foot, bike, or public transportation.

Cons

bullying, hostile managers spoil the entire experience. When I had a problem with a new manager, I found that no one in the entire management chain wanted to let me talk about it. More than one became visibly angry when I tried to tell them anything, or even ask questions. This included Human Resources, whose manager seemed to only want to fight with me and shout me down. Most people will probably never see their worst behavior but at Indeed, HR is not only not your friend--they're your enemy. Indeed has policies on paper that protect employees against arbitrary treatment, but it's ignored in practice. Big talk about advancement when I was recruited was a mirage. Indeed is currently hiring rapidly but seems to prefer to hire new people over the heads of existing employees. Salaries are slightly below market. In-house software: Indeed's operations are dependent on many weird, idiosyncratic home-made software services that are poorly conceived and barely documented. You'll have to learn to deal with these under a management that's far from understanding.

Indeed Response

Hi there. Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review about your time working in our Austin office. Our HR team are meant to be there to help build bridges between departments and people. As such, we are disappointed to read you felt that you never received that level of support from our team. Furthermore bullying and intimidation are all very serious allegations which we will look into internally. We do not tolerate or encourage such behavior at Indeed, and strongly believe our leaders should never put employees in uncomfortable and disrespected situations. We would like to hear more from you on this so please do reach out to us on inside@indeed.com

Pros

I loved the talented people I worked with; I appreciated being appreciated; I loved helping employers hire; and I really thought this would be the company I retired from.

Cons

The company culture changed significantly after it became publicly traded; I didn't particularly care for how they handled layoffs; they didn't always act on the feedback they received; and they were slow to jump on the AI train.
