Good salary, bad culture - Product Manager Hopper Employee Review

Pros

The salary is good and you get to work with smart people. The STO (single threaded ownership) structure gives you a degree of autonomy and ownership over your team's roadmap, more similar to an early-stage startup rather than a big corporation. Depending on your team, you may work on exciting projects with scale and lots of learning opportunities.

Cons

Layoffs are happening every year for the past 3 years, senior people are getting let go without good reason. Leadership is not transparent and only holds town halls once a year. Company vision is unclear and growth has been slowing down. Overall, the culture is very transactional with zero efforts to foster connection between employees - there are no team events, team building gatherings or learning & development initiatives. Many teams are ruled by urgency culture where roadmap items get dropped/deprioritized while endless requests are coming up and distracting everybody.

Pros

pay, remote, some good/smart people in pockets

Cons

Senior leaders could not care less about employees and routinely make bad market decisions leading to foreseeable product issues and eventual layoff cycles. There was a time a few years back where employees criticized the dark patterns in the app - the president got pissed and said 'the data didn't show it was an issue', then a few months later when we got bad press about those patterns dismissed it as our competitors planting stories - sums up the culture pretty clearly.
