Pros

Most of the people who work there are great. It's usually a friendly environment to work in. Work/Life balance. Remote working.

Cons

Some people can't separate their work and personal lives, and feel that any open discussion or constructive feedback is a personal attack. Business wide, and even team wide discussion on product development, or fixing existing problems with the platform is actively discouraged, and everyone is told to file their ideas away in a place nobody looks. This means there's a lack of innovation, problem solving, productive and inclusive decision making, general product and business development, communication and teamwork across the business. The culture is confused. It feels like nobody knows what Hive's core values are, or what the culture is supposed to be. It doesn't seem to matter to the SLT. The SLT lack diversity, physically and mentally. They say that they are committed to improving the diversity across the business, but their actions regularly contradict this in many ways. They don't have much awareness of how teams work and what people actually do on a daily business, and have little to no understanding of the product. Yet they push things through and flip decisions without having any understanding of the impacts of those decisions, or any consideration for the strain they're putting on both the platform and employees. There's a lack of direction from them, probably due to a lack of valuable insight and relevant experience from most of them. They also take criticism or constructive feedback very badly, and anything which isn't 100% positive is either shut down or ignored. They have complained about negative feedback and discouraged people from sharing their opinions or questions. Their focus is to make hive look good on the outside so they can sell it, they don't really care about making a good product, improving peoples lives or looking after their employees. There aren't any real benefits to working at Hive. You get a few days of extra holiday, but not much else that can really be considered a 'benefit' of working there. They don't pay well either, and employee's aren't likely to get a pay rise unless they ask for one or threaten to leave.

HiveHR Response

Thanks for taking the time to share your views. We appreciate the feedback. Here at Hive we actively use our own tools to encourage employee feedback no matter what the issue, so we’re not afraid of hearing feedback from our people, good or bad. In fact, we respond to every comment that is made to us. We recognise that sometimes people may not like the answer we have, but we do our best to communicate the rationale for our decisions. Innovation is, of course, important to us and we have internal tools to support us with the collection of ideas, but like most scaling businesses we realise there are things we can do to make this approach even better. Our leadership team are experts in their field all with diverse backgrounds and experience bringing a wealth of knowledge to our workplace. Diversity is not something we stop, we are continuing to bring diversity through our remote working policy which extends our reach to candidates, and as we love to learn, we have just completed our own inclusion and diversity survey and we’ll listen and act. The reference to our culture is a good point as culture is defined by the people who work in our business. Through Covid, most business cultures have been in a state of flux and ours is no different. The great thing for us is our people who strive to foster a culture of collaboration, autonomy, and high performance but there will always be times where this is not spot on, so when we see it, we call it, and sometimes people don’t like to hear it, but we always aim to do the right thing by our values. Our collaboration is demonstrated during weekly stand-ups, monthly meetings and cross-functional working and we know we’re not perfect, but we continue to look at ways we can be even better. Covid was difficult for every business through the tenacity of the leadership team, Hive achieved fantastic levels of growth and the continued direction and support given to our people is enabling us to beat that growth this year, helping us keep jobs for everyone. As we grow we bring more new initiatives to support our people along with a revised benefits package which is proving to be a welcomed employee value proposition.
