Pros

The best part of HDC is all the creative and kind people I work with. From the design dept. to billing, almost everyone is an artist, musician, world-traveler and/or athlete. During my time there, I've been inspired by coworkers to try new things that have since become a part of my identity and improved my life; I've made exciting connections in the city's art/music/social scenes; I've made long-term friendships. Those who move on often come back to visit with hugs and smiles, commenting on how their new work environment is not the "family" that HDC was for them. Although things may get a little frenzied when a deadline looms, in general everyone is very laid-back and genuinely nice. I receive so many thank-yous for doing regular job duties, sometimes it's almost ridiculous! There are great staff & community events year-round, including things HDC hosts such as catered breakfasts, bi-annual art shows and beer-fueled afternoon parties organized by the staff (with laser tag, dunk tanks, etc.). Also, we like spending time together SO much, extra-curricular activities include sports leagues, weekly happy hour, volunteering together and supporting each others' art and music. The clients we pursue are ones I can really get behind: active lifestyle, health-related and those focused on sustainable/green lifestyles. We do a lot of great pro-bono for the community, and many employees are heavily involved with community service and activism. Ken Hanson is especially involved and inspiring in that area as of late. Company structure really allows for transparency and communication. Managers listen to new thoughts & input, and the president's door is always open. Leadership is constantly looking for ways of improving.

Cons

At times I wish we produced some creative work that I could really write home about. It's all quality work, that is certain, but not often the type you'd see going viral or winning accolades at major international design competitions, for example. I admit I'm not a designer myself, but I can still tell the difference between creative that is brilliant vs. standard fare. Every year or two there is a small round of lay-offs. It's really heart-breaking since we are such a close-knit group. Each time it's happened, I've considered looking for a new job; but it's probably impossible to escape in this industry that ebbs and flows with the amount of client work coming in.

Pros

The general populous of employees under the senior management are dynamic and delightful and unfortunately are all choosing to leave for similar reasons somehow entirely incomprehensible to leadership. But hey, theres a coffee machine and a monthly lunch.

Cons

HD's leadership is composed almost entirely of unrelatable, impersonal, uncharismatic individuals generally incapable of doing much beyond being in meetings. The work is intensely disorganized and unmanageable and the most common reply to any hand raised is, "thats just how the advertising industry is". Even if you are an individual willing to go above and beyond, that isn't rewarded. Promotions are rare and raises are non-existent. The company is hemorrhaging employees as they struggle to listen to feedback from those below the 6 figure salary mark.
