Pros

Independent work preparing the office for the day and solving problems. Chatting with some customers and staff was nice.

Cons

The ceo demands early appt hour availability on website despite not hiring staff who want to work those hours so you’ll waste a lot of time manipulating the system to please everyone. Some tax preparers have no respect for their clients time and frequently show up late to early appointments despite being scheduled for weeks. You’ll start a lot of days apologizing for something you didn’t do and dealing with disgruntled clients. Some staff will even blame their lateness or schedule fumble on the front desk and the client will be mad at you and, if you point out to staff how the mistake was made to prevent it from happening again, you will be bullied. Sometimes clients request a particular preparer and some others will accuse you of being unfair. The filing is frequently misfiled under first names or thrown in wherever and some staff will blame you despite multiple people having access to the cabinets. Preparers think it’s beneath them to clean the bathroom and common areas even though they and their clients use it and expect it to be clean. It’s a hierarchy, you’re at the bottom, and some staff will remind you daily. And this is not an exhaustive list.

Pros

If you get in the right office you can have amazing coworkers and can learn so much. You can gain a ton of experience and knowledge if you are willing to work and collaborate with other preparers. Training is robust and is there for you to utilize and work your way up to higher salary. The potential to earn a full years salary working for half the year once trained up to a higher level and build your book of business.

Cons

Communication is often not the best and in the offseason you are off boarded or get reduced salary and only work a day or two a week
