Pros

People in the trenches doing the tactical work are some of the hardest working, most dedicated employees you will ever encounter. Individual contributors pull out the stops year after year to deliver against tax season readiness activities. Tax Professionals in the field are second to none There are some great leaders...if you are lucky enough to get one and keep one for any length of time.

Cons

Corporate culture and middle/senior leadership is an issue. Politics are everywhere, but at Block, it's significantly more than normal. And it's hit or miss with leadership. The company lacks effective prioritization and resource planning. It's not unusual to work 60 hours a week for extended periods in order to deliver against last minute or competing expectations...only to have the work not show up on anyone's strategic radar after it's done. There's very little meaningful feedback conversations or career planning partnership from managers and directors. And there is lots of finger pointing. Overall the environment is chaotic. It's a roller coaster ride as strategies are adopted and abandoned, then re-adopted year after year. It's a tough environment, even for the most effective, and talented people.

Pros

If you get in the right office you can have amazing coworkers and can learn so much. You can gain a ton of experience and knowledge if you are willing to work and collaborate with other preparers. Training is robust and is there for you to utilize and work your way up to higher salary. The potential to earn a full years salary working for half the year once trained up to a higher level and build your book of business.

Cons

Communication is often not the best and in the offseason you are off boarded or get reduced salary and only work a day or two a week
