Pros

- a holistic work experience. The shipyard is medium-sized, so gives a good opportunity to involve in all facets of shipbuilding from design to procurement to construction and other ancillaries - well-paid public sector job with job security - good fringe benefits - employee population from around the country, giving a varied cultural integration

Cons

- no appreciation/incentive for extra effort or innovation - does not promote/recognize the need for higher education. Part-time courses are recognized, but no sensible schemes to allow young minds to pursue higher education. Even during recruitment, candidates with a master's degree are given no significant recognition. - flawed promotion policy: from assistant manager to senior manager (4 posts in between), the promotion is time-bound. Irrespective of your performance, you will anyway get promoted after 3 years. It kills the innovative spirit of the young recruits. - performance related pay is an oxymoron. It is more related to the way company perceives you at the time when the PRP is disbursed (which is usually 2 years after the actual financial year), rather than your actual performance during the financial year. When the PRP is disbursed, if you have retired or already left the company, they make reasons to avoid giving you this amount , even though you have high performance ratings - so that they can appease the average employee who is still idling away at the company, waiting for the next time-bound promotion. - generally unethical work culture, aimed at clocking maximum overtime
