this job requires patience. these children have experienced sever trauma and the acuity of the children is increasing.
Cons
if only enough staff would apply to work here, we could build a strong system of support for children. not enough staff so long hours and over time right now. if we had enough staff, the job would become more enjoyable.
- Worked hours I wanted as a part-timer
- Had opportunity to build rapport with kids who needed it
- Week-long training gave us decent idea of what job would look like
Cons
- There is no protection or backup. If a strong, 16-year-old kid attacks you it's up to you to restrain him without punching him. If you can't do it eventually an officer will arrive and cuff him.
- DCS suspends nearly 100% of employees who restrain a kid that is dangerous and attacking staff or peers
- If kids escape locked buildings staff are encouraged to follow them and keep them on gated company premises until the kid decides to return to regular schedule. Management has no plan for these basic problems.
