Pros

Hands on animal research experience. Applicable science to the current environmental threats.

Cons

Require a 45 hour work week with no overtime pay without informing employees of this prior to hiring. Do not value their employees time or skills, poor communication from management to biological/animal care staff. Decisions are not discussed as a team (even with only 6-7 employees), leading to messy plans that have to be fixed along the way and poor science. Management blatantly lies to employees regarding other employees to save face, creating a hostile work environment with a lots of politics. Does not pay enough for the skills they are looking for as well as paying $10,000 below industry standard for a similar position. Will disregard companies own protocols (SOP's), CPW regulations, and sponsor request. My position was terminated at 90 days without having ever received a complaint about my performance or an indication that my skills were not enough to complete my work. Complaints about management were dismissed as "how they speak/write/are" and managements ego's prevented other employees from being able to effectively contribute to meetings and decisions. Nepotism within management creates a divide between them and the rest of the staff.

Genesis Laboratories Response

Wow. The absurdity of this review makes it really hard to take seriously or respond to. Reader, please keep in mind the former employees that leave reviews on this site are often ones terminated with cause (like this one) and are angry about it. They will stretch and twist the truth (and lie) to slander their former bosses to make themselves feel better and to get vengeance for a result that was really their own doing. Part of me wants to go line by line through these accusations and set the record straight.. but instead I’ll just say there is little to NO truth at all to them. The maturity level of young “adults” coming right out of college – even with a masters degree, sadly, isn’t what it used to be. And Nepotism??? “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” Nepotism: Giving undue advantage to relatives or personal friends because of their relationship rather than their abilities. I am the Owner/President of this company and my son, who has an advanced degree in Wildlife Sciences from Texas A & M and over 20 years of experience in research and development, is the Vice President in charge of research. Is he favored? Well, yes – because he knows what he’s doing.

Pros

A great opportunity for any aspiring wildlife scientist/specialist. Research involving animals takes employees to both the laboratory and the field. Research projects are conducted in other parts of the world (India, Kenya, etc.) and Genesis pays for travel and housing expenses and also increases salary by 30% while you're there! The research often deals with preventing neglected diseases that you otherwise would have never heard of, but that cause a lot of problems for a lot impoverished people. The company makes sure that you are properly vaccinated before you hit the road. It is rewarding to know that the work being conducted might potentially save some lives. You also get to be involved in vector and invasive species work on the domestic side. Novel techniques to control invasive feral hogs and problematic ectoparasites highlight some of the domestic work. Management provides training, but also employs a "hands-off" approach, allowing employees to problem solve and grow as scientists. The company regularly publishes research findings, so you might have the opportunity to add a couple of research articles to your CV in the future. Also, it is a small company, so everybody knows everybody, and decisions can be made rapidly without having to have tons and tons of meetings.

Cons

The building is on a hill and the wind can be outrageous. Other than that, I don't have many complaints. If you're looking for a cushy desk job, Genesis probably isn't for you.
