Pros

Interning at Food Tank is a good experience so far with interesting writing assignments mostly relating to food and climate crisis issues. Staff is passionate and supportive.

Cons

Nothing comes mind other than I wish they were hiring full time positions.

Pros

Small team so lots of great opportunity to do high level work. They are really at the epicenter in terms of relationships with every critical food stakeholder group.

Cons

Sometimes disorganized and a bit of a frantic environment.

Pros

The organization is one of the only nonprofits addressing food systems issues around the world.

Cons

Unfortunately, they are addressing food systems in an unorganized and insufficient way. Interns are asked to pitch 3-5 ideas per week, but it takes months for those ideas to get approved, and even after approval, most articles will never be published on Food Tank. They offset the low wages with the promise that interns will leave with a portfolio of work published with a well-respected organization, but after months of work, all I had were three published articles, and two of them were fluff pieces written for friends of the founder. The Founder & President micromanages everything to the point that the organization can't grow. They are still relying on part-time interns to produce content and run their events after being around for over a decade. Finally, as someone else pointed out years ago, the paychecks do not come in on time and require several follow-ups to actually receive. During my internship, this was painted as a hiccup that never happens, but clearly, it is an issue that has been going on for years.
