A dumpster fire. - Academic Program Specialist Florida State University Employee Review

Pros

Benefits are good -- and cheap.

Cons

Leadership doesn't care about you if you're not faculty. I worked in four departments over nearly a decade with FSU. Only one of those departments was not an absolute nightmare, and that's only because my direct supervisor insulated her reports from leadership's nonsense. Staff is chronically overworked and underpaid and if you have a Dean who has an axe to grind about something, no matter how minimal, your time will be miserable. If you're not a faculty member bringing in grant money you might as well be dirt -- they'll treat you like it. Oh, and don't expect pay raises. Ever. Don't even expect union representation if you're an Academic Program Specialist, which you probably will be, because they use that title as a catch-all for 100 different things -- even though every person I met with this title has done a different thing.

Pros

Great opportunity to gain hands-on research experience, flexible part-time hours that work well with class schedules, and supportive faculty mentors who guide you through academic projects.

Cons

Pay can be low for the amount of work involved, tasks can sometimes be repetitive, and workload may vary significantly depending on the research project and professor.
