Pros

- You get to see the cool stuff people are buying. - The employees were pretty cool but that'll also depend on location. - You get a (meager) discount.

Cons

- They expect you to be everywhere at once. When not at registers, straightening up the front aisles. Or folding clothes near the front. There were always customers and little backup so I barely got to straightening the front aisles. Then you'd be asked why the front isn't straightened up even though there was a steady stream of customers. - No clear direction as to what to do and prioritization seemed scattered. (Example: "Go fold these clothes. No, wait, go sort out this aisle. Come unpack these boxes first though. Why aren't the clothes folded? There are customers, go help up at the front. You should always stay on top of helping the cashiers. Now come unpack these boxes.") - Customers were stressful to deal with. Lots of theft. - I was told to work off the clock in order to finish my work at the end of the shift. I stayed back for an hour or two with one of the managers/higher ups and looking back, I'm pretty sure that was illegal. I even asked if that was allowed and because it sounded suspicious, and I was told it was what our store manager wanted us to do.

Pros

-20% discount -med, dental, vision benefits -20-ish minimum hours per week -genuinely can be a fun store to work in when run well

Cons

-store managers have little to no oversight and cross professional boundaries often - hr is ineffective, document everything yourself, report to the EEOC -growth opportunities in the store are very limited and they will lowball you no matter what you do or sacrifice -crazy turnover because the expectations are unrealistic store managers lie about pay budget to everyone -more likely to hire teens and students because they are easier to take advantage of for little pay, only needs adult for when teens and students cannot work (night shifts, school days) - nearby stores, especially if in a strip mall or shopping center, like tj maxx have higher base pay, better benefits, better security, and more hour availability
