Pros
I have been working as a Contractor Research Associate in FORTH-ICS, full time, in various forms for 6 years. -The buildings, equipment and location are nice. -There are opportunities to be engaged in interdisciplinary projects, where partners like other institutions or companies from other countries are engaged. -This gives opportunities to travel abroad, do scientific publication and attend conferences. HOWEVER, this is dependent on the laboratory you work, inner policies and middle management. It does not hurt to make it clear what you do expect in terms of these perks and active engagement to avoid disappointments. -There are bright people there, which gives opportunities for nice team work depending on the laboratory.
Cons
-Affected by the Greek economic crisis that resulted both in brain drain and cuts at salaries. -Contract salaries and perks (e.g. traveling, project assignment opportunities, attending conferences and meetings), sense of fairness and appreciation may vary even within the same laboratory.
