Very few careerists as flight instructors. A great center of learning with a revolving door. - Flight Instructor Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Employee Review

Pros

Safest fleet in the country. Best aircraft in the country. (avionics upgrades and traffic avoidance) Free college tuition. College environment. Big name, good for resume.

Cons

I felt it was difficult to make a career (meaning at least more than two years) at ERAU as a flight instructor. The pay was relatively fair, but the structure for earning said paycheck was highly variable and quite a let-down. Work was subject to fluctuations with little that could be done to keep an normal paycheck. Students are college students and a flight rating is just another college class. Not the most motivated or dedicated students I've taught. I earned anywhere from 1200 to 230 dollars in a pay period. I have a family of four. My wife always wanted to know why I would be home so often. (no work!) That's embarrassing to explain and causes your family grief. Opportunities for advancement were tied to check ride success rate which is the exact opposite of the metric you should use, CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. Don't teach to pass checkrides. That defeats the purpose of education. You don't teach to the test.,
