Pros

Nice office, nice people, some good engineers. If you are young and beginning your career this is a great place to learn some hard lessons. Learn old technology, integrate with new, learn complex environments etc.

Cons

Docmagic is a great place to work if you enjoy 90's 'buts in seats' mentality. The CEO is always right and always knows best because he knows what his customers need better than anyone else. There are a lot of contractors in leadership, this means that they are there for the money. The contractor leaders are consistently forcing their own people on the organization. QA and Engineering are full of contractors because the organization's benefits and pay are not worth real talent. From an engineering perspective, this company has over 20 different products all on different technologies (some from the 80's that are no longer supported). This can be fun, but also makes it difficult to develop robust products that span technologies. The techops team does not understand AWS, cloud technologies, there are no app developers, and all the fun stuff is done by contractors in Canada. The DB 'universe db' is no longer supported by the original company, but this is where the business logic is. The company stack is universe db, java, php, aws, chime, java script, app languages etc. Every technology is being used poorly. Employees need to 'shut up and work' is the culture. This company has terrible communication from leadership about company goals, future, progression, etc. The CEO and his immediate circle believe that employees should burn the midnight oil because they are being paid to do so. Unfortunately, the salary is not competitive for many roles particularly in engineering, and requires 12-16 hour workdays. Leadership likes to say that things will 'slow down,' but they do not. It is not uncommon for leadership to yell, curse, and shame employees publicly. There is a culture of pushing people out and isolating them. There was an engineering manager who had filed a harassment report so she couldn't be fired but other managers were encouraged to leave her out of operations and meetings so she would 'just leave'. While other 'close' and 'liked' employees get to say and do minimal work, behave inappropriately, etc because they are friends of the 'CEO'. The CEO actively silos departments and creates tension in the organization. The culture is all about CYA and blaming someone when unrealistic deadlines are not met. Often the CEO sets features and timelines and once he sees progress he adds more features and functions which he expects to be done in the original estimation. Finally, the CEO is the king of the castle. There is no board, there is no budget just CEO approval, there are no goals (except making money), timelines are based on what the CEO desires, and leadership enforces those rules. "Yelling, cursing, degrading, shaming, backstabbing" are considered to be showing "passion" something leadership holds in high esteem. Benefits: Health insurance is bad and expensive not company paid. Minimum sick days required by law (3), and only 2 weeks of accumulated vacation. No flex schedule and you can only WFH by permission on a case by case basis.
