Pros

I have started and restarted this review because DeanHouston is a difficult place to describe. The owners are wildly passionate about their business, and they are very loyal to their long-term employees. They are heavily involved in the day-to-day business. Clients are very loyal to DeanHouston. The office space is new and fresh. The employees are kind and hardworking.

Cons

With the leadership involvement comes a level of micromanagement and creative stifling I have never come close to experiencing prior to working here. I witnessed, on several occasions (much more the rule than the exception), one of the partners drawing out exactly what he wanted the creative to look like/say/etc and then handing it to the Creative Director to execute. The creativity and processes (or lack thereof) are decades behind. This works for the agency though because they are only dealing with B2B businesses who must not know what else is available to them in the way of agency services. Further, there are a few employees who have been there for years who put up with a level of disrespect and borderline abuse from one of the partners. While I respect the grit that the owners have and their passion for the business, there is a definite "work harder/longer, not smarter" attitude. If you are looking for a modern workforce that values your individual creativity, expertise, ideas and solutions- I cannot stress enough, this is NOT the place for you. You will not change the culture, and you will not be given freedoms to approach problem-solving through a new lens.

Pros

The work is interesting and often rewarding, especially when teams collaborate to come up with unique solutions to client and internal challenges. Most of the staff are very dedicated, but willing to have fun. The Covington location is outstanding with great options for dining and entertainment.

Cons

The DeanHouston culture has a strong service mindset, and that can be inconvenient when important requests come in outside of work hours. Periods of rapid growth or contraction have created staffing challenges.

Pros

Ability to earn many certifications.

Cons

Many colleagues seemed unhappy with their jobs and seemed overworked. Sometimes they’d openly complain about sacrificing their personal lives for work and feeling pressured to never use the “unlimited” PTO. Not a whole lot of attention was paid to interns, and despite being very capable and eager to learn, I wasn’t trusted to do any work besides simple data entry tasks. Maybe this was just my department though, because when I started to connect with others outside my department, they were happy to train me on things and utilized me a little better! Just felt like the culture could be a little better… but maybe things have changed since?
