A fair company run by crazy people - Reporter Courthouse News Employee Review

Pros

The hours/pay/benefits are very generous. Management is very forgiving regarding time taken off. It's an incredibly equitable company. Filing the daily reports is straightforward.

Cons

I mean, look at the website and read the articles. Because of the owner's delusions of media grandeur, the company perceives itself as a major media outlet and expects accordingly of its employees but remains ignorant of the reality of modern media, including how things like Facebook work or how a website should look. This means that reporters are forced to cover and write stories that are both poorly edited and unread by any audience. It often feels like a child wearing grown-up clothes. This generally means that employees who work for Courthouse News without outside clips stay with the company for years, perhaps out of loyalty, but surely also out of necessity, as a CNS portfolio is not built to impress.

Pros

I have worked for CNS for 9 months now and it's hands down the best company I have ever worked for. I have been a freelance writer for over 10 years, but with the advent of those $5 article companies, my business was slowly declining. CNS offers generous pay because (I'm guessing) they want people to stay for a long time and apparently a lot of employees do. The woman who trained me has been with the company for over 8 years. It is part-time, but there are frequent opportunities for additional hours(when other reporters take vacation time) and a cash bonus every time a customer downloads one of your cases. My supervisor and the other people I have met so far are really nice. Generous vacation and sick time...And I love the flexibility.

Cons

I have nothing negative to report. Anyone who has something negative to say about CNS must not know what other companies can be like...it can be pretty intense and cut throat out there.
