Definitely a job and not a career for PhD scientists. There isn’t a career ladder with changing responsibility as you advance. You’ll do the same job you did as a new hire after bing there for 25 years. Large very hierarchical organizations with 200+ people of which 5-15 people have careers and gain responsibility over time.
