Pros

Overall compass hires extremely well. I work with some of the most talented dynamic individuals I have ever worked with. When I first joined there was ample opportunity to grow and build new skills. However this has shifted dramatically and is no longer the case.

Cons

The amount of change that this company has gone through in the last year is unmatched. Upper level decisions are made that make work for the middle and lower levels impossible. When I was recruited I was told I was being hired as a customer success manager for a booming tech company. Now my role has devolved into a secretarial position where I am essentially the admin for 200+ agents. Not only that but compass laid off a significant amount of marketing, tech and product support. Which means, I also carry the responsibilities of these roles with no elevated compensation, rewards or incentives. Everyone is burnt out except for the people who suck up to management and gossip. They are rewarded making the entire culture deeply toxic. Middle management is complacent and does nothing to support their direct reports. This is not a real tech company it is a brokerage, so if you want to pursue a path in tech this is not it. They only get great people because they blatantly lie about the role and opportunities in the interviews. Lastly, compass announced that this was the year of the employee yet has done more to harm employees, including 2 rounds of massive layoffs, taking away perks and benefits like wellness and tuition stipend and taking away bonuses and raises. Truly stay away.

Pros

People are smart. Very much a “move fast and break things” culture which can be refreshing compared to bureaucracy-heavy corporate life. I don’t agree with their values (if they have any) but what they’re doing is unquestionably working - business outlook is strong.

Cons

Leadership will tell you there’s no ego or self-interest involved in their strategy - that is untrue. It’s an extremely heliocentric culture around the CEO. A lot of the work is based around what people they're guessing he’ll like, but there’s no alignment at the outset and something you worked on for weeks/months will be trashed after one look from him. Their mission is ostensibly about empowering agents but they are solving a problem that pretty much no one was complaining about before they started, and which just so happens to work highly in their favor in terms of market share. It’s just business but very disingenuous- don’t believe the hype that it’s altruistic somehow. Also the CEO loves to share his sob story about his single mother upbringing, but simultaneously enacts some of the most anti-parent policies you could think of.
