Pros

The mission-driven nature of the work has attracted some of the most passionate, intelligent, and hardworking professionals I’ve had the privilege of working with. The team consistently delivers high-quality products that make a meaningful impact to people's lives, and there’s a strong sense of purpose that unites teams. Being fully remote — needless to say at this day and age.

Cons

CH routinely gaslights and exploits employees who are genuinely committed to public health. Employees are expected to "go above and beyond" without clear expectations, often juggling excessive workloads from multiple projects while being underpaid, under-recognized, and denied clear pathways for career development. Management culture remains toxic. Micromanagement is widespread, and empathy is sorely lacking. I personally witnessed two coworkers cry—one during a Zoom meeting, another in their car after work—due to burnout and lack of support. Managers are rarely held accountable for the environments they create. Although the company has attempted to move away from its infamous “manage up” culture, in practice, managers frequently shift blame to employees to cover for their own mistakes or poor planning, perpetuating fear and distrust rather than psychological safety. CH preaches a commitment to DEI, but this feels more like lip service than lived values. During recent rounds of layoffs, there was little transparency into how decisions were made. Some factors are out of the company's control (e.g., federal budget cut) but the way CH treats people is really disappointing. CH also promotes unlimited PTO as a perk, but it’s a hollow promise. Employees are stretched so thin that taking time off feels impossible. There’s a constant, unspoken guilt trip: if you take a break, your teammates—who are already overwhelmed—will be forced to work even longer hours to cover for you. As a result, many people skip vacations or log back on during PTO just to stay afloat.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. It's great to read your feedback on the CH team and the impact of our work - we couldn't agree more. We’re sorry to hear that you felt unsupported during your time at CH. While we’re proud of our mission and the passion of our team, we also recognize that managing workloads can be difficult in a consulting environment. We work hard to maintain transparency and clear lines of communication with employees, especially in these times of uncertainty — but we acknowledge it can be hard to hit the mark every time. In the case of recent federal budget cuts, for example, we shared our lay-off decision-making process with staff and offered competitive severance payments to those affected. We truly did our best to fairly handle an unfortunate situation that was out of our control. Feel free to follow-up with us directly at admin@communicatehealth.com. Pros

Benefits are fine, and they’ve retained a talented staff despite the terrible environment because they tend to high mission-focused people.

Cons

Too many to list. Senior leadership is an absolute mess. One owner became recently more present in the daily work, and her lack of social awareness and general poor communication skills leaves a messy wake that staff have to try to clean up (when she’s not throwing them under the bus for one reason or another to try to deflect from her own serious lack of competence). The culture is toxic, and doesn’t in any way reflect the org’s externally marketing of it. The only hope here is that the company that acquired CH is shades better than its current leadership. It wouldn’t take much.
