Pros

Mission-Driven Work: The organization’s commitment to increasing diversity in STEM through education and opportunity is deeply inspiring and fulfilling. Supportive Team Culture: Collaborating with passionate and driven colleagues—especially during all-hands-on-deck moments—fosters strong camaraderie and teamwork. Strong Local Network: Being based in Austin, the team benefits from a close-knit group of local staff and program coordinators who bring energy and dedication to in-person events and programming. Growth Opportunities: There are multiple avenues for professional development, leadership, and expanding responsibilities within the organization. Impactful Programming: Seeing the tangible results of students gaining internships, college acceptances, and career readiness brings real purpose to the work. Collaborative Environment: Cross-functional collaboration is encouraged and supported, especially during large-scale initiatives and events.

Cons

Challenging Leadership Style: The CEO is often absent during the planning and execution phases but appears on the day of major events with high and sometimes unrealistic expectations. When things go well, credit is not shared, and when things fall short—often due to uncontrollable circumstances—blame is subtly shifted to staff. Unsupportive Middle Management: Certain directors, particularly at the program level, display disrespectful behavior toward their teams, often micromanaging or speaking condescendingly. This behavior goes unchecked, which affects team morale and psychological safety. Poor Work-Life Balance: The culture is not supportive of employees with families. Long hours, weekend work, and expectations for rapid response times are common. Most of the leadership team lacks caregiving responsibilities, which can create a disconnect in empathy or flexibility. Lack of Onboarding and Communication: New hires often face unclear expectations, minimal training, and very little guidance. Communication across teams is inconsistent, and new team members are sometimes expected to meet aggressive goals without the necessary tools or support. Unsustainable Workload: Team members are often assigned more work than is feasible within standard hours, and failure to meet unrealistic goals is sometimes met with criticism rather than constructive feedback or support.

Pros

My experience with Code2College was incredibly positive. The program offered a flexible class schedule, allowing students to balance coursework with other activities without feeling overwhelmed. The supportive management and mentors played a key role in my success, regularly checking in to ensure I stayed on track. Also, the variety of coding classes across different fields gave me the opportunity to explore multiple areas of tech such as cybersecurity, or AI, making it a great program for students looking to build their skills in a structured yet accommodating environment.

Cons

Some issues i came across were the class instructors, due to it being mainly online, there were cases were the instructor was a no show, or was having issues, but this wasn't a big issue since code2College always dealt with it via a replacement, and they already have their lesson plans documented for students to follow. Also internships are not guaranteed so students going into Code2COllege have to work for the opportunity and it will not always be guaranteed on the first year of joining

Pros

- Part-time employees get okay hourly pay and hour flexibility. Good for students looking for a side gig. - Most of your coworkers will be amazing.

Cons

- All employees, but full-time especially, are overworked and underpaid. There is no mobility, so if you started part-time, don’t expect conversion, and they would rather hire someone external to fill roles. There is no investment in staff and they are used until they burn out. - Management routinely blocks PTO use for entire quarters and raise or promotion eligibility for entire years company-wide. Raises are rare and rarely large enough to notice. - The CEO doesn’t actually care about the mission and will take actions actively detrimental to the students for no justifiable reason. He micromanages but is never there when you need him and is misogynistic and spiteful towards employees and students. - All negativity in the company comes from the CEO and filters down. It doesn’t have to filter down far since he keeps firing or driving off leadership, leaving the rest of the company overworked and taking on duties far above their job description without any recognition or compensation. - While expecting everyone to be ready at a moment’s notice to hop into another understaffed department, they also restrict what each employee role is allowed to do, banning them from things they really need to get their job done effectively, often resulting in games of telephone seemingly engineered to stop you from building helpful professional connections.
