Pros

The organization feels like a tight-knit family. This is not a place where you sit in a cubical and never interact with other humans. The office is built into an apartment suite and each room is roughly organized by department so people you interact frequently with are all right there. I work directly with the Executive Director and it is amazing. Joe is not afraid to let me generate ideas, throw them at the wall and see what sticks. He's been the ED for 35 years and is nothing short of an inspiration. He lets me build entire programs from scratch and constantly encourages me to learn, grow and make contacts as I do so. All of my co-workers are highly motivated in their program areas and it shows.

Cons

Salaries, (at least mine) are not competitive at all, but, the experience I am getting here is far-and-away better than any other non-profit I know of in Philly and I will be able to leverage that when the time comes for me to seek my next position. Management is slow when it comes to doing many administrative things. My first annual review happened 6 months after the anniversary of my hiring date. Part of this can be explained by Joe being very involved in all areas of the Council (for the better) but it does suck when your review is delayed that long and then the salary increase isn't retroactive.

Pros

Smart, funny coworkers who are genuinely passionate and knowledgeable about their work. Lots of opportunities to show initiative: not a tremendous amount of oversight, so you have a lot of discretion over the direction your work takes. I got great experience and learned tons. No dress code to speak of.

Cons

Low pay - Everyone was paid roughly the same, abysmally low salary, regardless of seniority or degrees. High turnover - Something like 20% of our workforce left during the time that I worked there. This would not come as a surprise to anyone who has worked there. Office loud and cramped - Everyone is on top of each other, and if you are doing work that requires concentration, you will frequently find it hard to achieve. Flat management structure - The downside of getting to more or less run your own projects is that there aren't senior people to answer questions or provide mentorship. Org depends on grants - This means that you will inevitably spend time writing proposals, which is most likely not something you want to do. Some people gravitated toward this type of work, saving me from having to do it, but in theory everyone is supposed to devote time to fundraising.
