Pros

They make it seem like it's $35-50 per hour. It's great if you love teaching chess to a bunch of children for very little pay.

Cons

The amount you get paid is per class. They do not pay extra for you to come early and setup or staying late to clean up or the time you spend in traffic to and from the school. Managers will side with schools 99% of the time if there's a problem. Policies and procedures keep changing, but instead of getting better, they just get more confusing and convoluted. We are still responsible for figuring it out. Most "wizards" work a couple classes per week. That's maybe $80/week for6 hours worth of work with a classroom full of elementary kids after a whole day of school.

We're sorry you feel that way! You are correct that our teaching assignments are paid per class, and most classes are an hour long. Because our programs are primarily offered after school, typically it's only possible to teach one class per day, and this position is very part-time - we wish we were able to offer our instructors more classes! During the scheduling process we try to match instructors with classes at schools that are closer to where they live, but this is not always an option. Including setup and cleanup, the average time commitment for a teaching assignment is between 1.25 and 1.5 hours, not including the commute to get to the school. Because of this, we offer a higher per-class rate of ~$50-$70 (depending on experience). We do offer reimbursement for travel times if an instructor accepts a class with a longer commute. Our instructors have the option of turning down offered assignments that are too far or don't work for their schedules. We recognize that the nature of the job schedule is unconventional, so we are careful to explain how things work during our interview, onboarding and training processes. For many of our instructors, this flexibility and limited time commitment is a big plus, allowing them to both teach with us and continue with regular engagements like college courses and another job. Students, schools and parents are our customers. If they share negative feedback about one of our classes, we investigate the problem, and work together with our instructors as a team on finding a solution. Based on your review, we will double check to make sure that the details of the job continue to be clearly communicated, on an organizational level. Thank you for your feedback!

Pros

Generous compensation for part-time instructors Flexible schedule perfect for college students and professionals looking for a side job or to re-enter the workforce Corporate culture is engaging and professional Company is growing Teaching chess to elementary students is fun and rewarding Approachable upper management open to new ideas Teaching a game that I love to young learners

Cons

Chess Wizards is a growing company that is expanding in new regions across the United States. With that growth comes the challenges of managing effectively, Chess Wizards is updating technology to accomodate the growth but that takes time. So often the procedures or systems in place are tedious and time-consuming. But that is not a negative. With strong growth there are bound to be problems. Chess Wizards looks at the issues as opportunities to improve and innovate not to stagnate.
