Pay for most reporters is below the London Living Wage and there are limited growth opportunities. They are currently undergoing lots of redundancies. They have hired a lot of people to come in with dubious job titles who are aimlessly obsessed with AI and approaching strategy in a very confusing way.
The rest of the company seems pretty happy but the editorial department suffers a serious lack of energy, ideas, and management talent. The publications write for a highly-specialised audience and want 'experts' but exclusively hire graduates on paltry wages.
It's tolerable for a short period or to get a foot in the door, but it's not a proper newsroom and there's no real commitment to journalism. It's a private equity-backed company which has just undergone a merger with a similar US company, so its interests are 100% corporate. Unfortunately over the past year there has been more and more AI slop and poor quality work. Not the journalists' fault, it's what management has pushed.
Would not recommend.
