Pros

salary is ok for berlin, people have some freedom to try new things , relaxed working hours and remote work allowed

Cons

you would think from the pros that it's a good place to work, but there are many problems and in the end it becomes quite stressful. in the last 8 months they made lots of job cuts, and that is after they said that they want to eliminate the 'bottom 10 percent of performers' . i think they are influenced quite easily by these big ideas they read, but it is not nice to make people feel like theyy are underperforming - when actually such environment does not work for everyone - in fact some people respond better to nice incentives rather than threats. there were good people who didn't get recognition for working hard - because of the flat structure the people who shouted the loudest got noticed - it's a shame when talent leaves the company due to a lack of recognition or not getting shown any appreciation and general problems in management

Thanks for your open feedback on the company culture. Many Startups in their early years experiment a lot with work culture and ways to communicate with their employees. Sometimes it works out in the first try, but sometimes it is necessary to fail a couple of times to achieve something great. CareerFoundry has been committed to building an outstanding culture, and in doing so have invested more resources than most other companies at equivalent stages. As a result of the experiences of the last year, we moved to a more consistent company structure. This includes dedicated Team Lead positions that work towards an open communication, clearly structured processes and reliable goal setting. We recognized the need for a dedicated HR position and created one in the process. Today we ensure listening to our colleagues through regular surveys, create personal development plans for each employee and implement a new salary structure as well. Our latest survey already shows a higher employee engagement as a result of this. CareerFoundry is all about learning and constant improvement - for our students, as well for ourselves.

Pros

This might be my dream job. I love this job because it's an extremely flexible work-from-anywhere position. You also get to work with ambitious students who truly appreciate your feedback. Here's how it works. You get to choose how many students you want. I believe the minimum is 10 students and the maximum is 40. You need special permission to take on more than that. If you factor in inactive student, students will submit between one and two assignments per week - my students submit on average 4.5 assignments each per month. So, if you have 20 students, you'll get about 90 assignments in a month. You are paid by assignment. You get 15 euros per assignment that you approve. So if you approve 90 assignments, you'll get 1350 euros, or approximately $1590. If you have an above-average rating from students and you have an average submission response time of less than 8 hours, you'll earn a 10% bonus. How much work is it to give students feedback on their assignments? I calculated my current average to be 22min per assignment. Certain deliverables like wireframes take much longer, but still - it averages out to 22 minutes per assignment for me. So having 20 students (about 90 assignments/month) means you'll work about 33 hours a month, which is less than 8 hours a week. That's like... $48 an hour! That's pretty good. But don't forget to set aside an extra 15% of your income for the self-employment tax (which you pay on top of your regular income tax).

Cons

You are expected to answer student questions related to the course, but you're not paid for the time you spend answering those questions. It can sometimes be a problem when you get a particularly chatty or attention-starved student who comes to you for every little inquiry instead of first consulting Google. CareerFoundry will happily give you time off if you request it. But in general, there are no days off. You're expected to respond to students within 24 hours. This means working Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays (tutors do get off a couple weeks in Dec by default, which is nice). I just wish Sundays were officially "off" days, and tutors could choose to work on Sundays or not. CareerFoundry offers the 10% bonus for tutors who have an average response time of 8 hours or less. This is awesome, but also stressful. I get many (maybe most) student assignments submitted in the evening or night. I feel like I have to stay up late to do them, overwise my average response time will go up. I need that 10% bonus to offset that darn freelance tax lol. Lastly, if you request more students, they won't be assigned to you right away. You'll only get a couple new students every few weeks. You have to build up your number of students very slowly. I understand the reasoning behind it, but it's still pretty annoying.

Pros

- Flexible schedule - Asynchronous communication - Students submit homework modules every few days and you just need to grade them + provide feedback within 24-hours.

Cons

It can take a while to build up a decent size group of students in your portfolio.
