Pros

Gain TEFL teaching experience, talk to people all over the world, help others learn English, supplement your income or fund your travels to countries with low cost of living. Overall, Cambly has been a good experience for me. I've talked to many people with incredible backgrounds. I think a lot of what you get out of the experience is what you put in. It's unstructured English tutoring, but I always make an effort to ask students about their English goals and challenges, and I cater the conversation to what they want to talk about. More times than not, people just want to practice casual conversation or read news articles with me. It's very easy work, and it's provided me with some tutoring background that I can apply toward my TEFL certification and future English-teaching opportunities.

Cons

Low pay, technical/connection difficulties. It took 3 months for my application to be approved, and after I was approved, there was a technical problem that prevented me from tutoring for 2 additional months after my approval. To resolve the problem, it took 2 months of ongoing attempts to contact support- through email and social media- to get someone to fix it. Sometimes, the camera cuts out or disconnects (this is sometimes due to Cambly, but it's sometimes due to students' connections and/or equipment). Pay is low. If you talk the whole time, it's $10 an hour, but in actuality, it averages out to about $7.50-$8 an hour when you're just using PH time and don't have reservations.

Pros

Very flexible schedule (you create your own), can easily cancel classes without too much of a penalty (make every student that you like a "regular" student so that if you get penalized...only regulars can book you...you have a huge pool of regulars), Cambly provides lessons, you can use almost any website as long as you don't need to share login information, it's fun and easy, many students become like friends, you can learn about different countries, cultures, and languages

Cons

The pay. It has never increased in the 14 years that Cambly has been in business. They are starting to offer a new program called "Cambly Pro" where you can make $15 an hour, but you have to apply to be a tutor for it and you could be denied. You have to have a 99% rating for 3 months to even be considered. If, like me, you are open to all students (and not just your regular students that you have become friends with), your rating can vary widely. No matter how good of a tutor you are, you will not be everyone's cup of tea. Also, Cambly does not allow tutors to teach in some states in the U.S. due to labor laws.
