Pros
Cabela's stores are huge, but the atmosphere is not that of a large store. The decor and layout of the stores make for a welcoming environment for customers and employees alike. The stores are well maintained, and the presentation of products is first class.
Cons
Where do I begin? Bass Pro Shops bought Cabela's back in 2017 and proceeded to ruin the company. They've replaced quality merchandise with junk. Customers who once thought the Cabela's name meant quality no longer shop there. Instead, we get the bargain hunters. Much of the focus nowadays is convincing customers to apply for the Cabela's-branded Mastercard. Customers can get points for buying selected merchandise in the store, points that are redeemable as cash on future purchases. The problem is 99% of customers either don't want a credit card or know they will be denied if they apply. It's a waste of time. Yet, every minute of every day an associate has to stand in front of the store to peddle credit cards. And even if they are not the "greeter", associates are expected to push credit cards when they are on the sales floor. That's one of the reasons customer service in the store is so bad. Associates don't try to sell product. Instead, they are told to focus on selling credit cards. So, what happens? Sales suffer, work hours are curtailed, and associates end up leaving. So, the store is constantly in a hiring mode. It's the definition of dysfunctional.
