Pros
Store manager was accommodating with my scheduling. Merchandise discount is useful esp. in winter when you need cold medications and tissues. good EAP program. Good ethics hotline. There IS advancement as my mgr worked up from cashier...it may kill her yet but she's totally determined and loyal to a company that doesn't properly train or seem to provide any real support to its store managers. Just give orders and requirements and takes away bonuses for a mess-up.
Cons
No training. No company training. Each store seems to be run as if the mgr had a franchise: i.e. sets rules, works towards own budget, hires, fires, sets priorities, etc. (I may be incorrect, but that's my perception from the bottom of the staff.) The employee scheduling software seems pretty unmangeable or my store doesn't use it correctly. Since we went on 24/7 the hours at midnight seem to require the employee's name be listed twice on the printed schedule. Also, the weekly schedule is posted less than 24 hours before the week begins. No anonymity in upward suggestions or discussions possible . unless there is a serious ethical or legal issue. Upper mgmt really appears to consider bottom level store employees to be disposable and potential slackers even after several years of service. The only acknowledgments that count are customer calls to the company 800 number -- as if coworkers don't know who works hard and who is a pain-in-the-ass. Therefore, psychological work environment is certainly not encouraging.
