Pros

Canadian owned and operated. Largest IT Consulting company in Canada. They deal with great clients, Bell, Rogers, Telus, RBC, TD, Public sector, etc. Multicultural organization with potential opportunities for growth. Locations are easily accessible by public transit. Markham location has ample of parking space. Matching your stocks for 3% of your salary (management and directors 3.5%) opportunity to work from home (tele-working) Flexibility around work schedule where it is available. Chance to change your business unit internally and work with multiple of clients. Helps you become more well diversed. Cutting edge technology and methodologies.

Cons

Operated by Montreal culture which dictates the rest of Canada on how to run the business. Very little flexibility when it comes to bettering their office workflow. Not a teachable organization based on previous mistakes. Leadership tends to stick to the same old methodologies that they started with 35 years ago. Company keeps buying smaller companies but when it comes to sales, they don't pay competitively, therefore the motivation to produce more doesn't exist. Salaries are not competitive in the market. considering CGI is the largest IT consulting company in Canada salaries should be much more competitive. Turn over is high at CGI due to mostly ambiguity on how to operate your desk from day to day. too many procedures and guidelines that are counter effective. When you point out the deficiencies no one actions. recognition is another part that is missing. Their Profit Participation Plan is mainly a joke as they rarely meet their targets, therefore no matter how hard you have worked and how satisfied your clients are, you won't be getting paid your PPP should the business unit not be profitable. Salary increases rarely happen. i know a lot of colleagues who have not received increases for several years. if any it is usually 1-2%. Management rarely recognizes the subordinates. Although it varies from team to team. You won't be promoted at CGI, you have to ask for promotion which is a bit discouraging. In other words, no matter how hard you work, they won't come and encourage you to get promoted. you have to ask and fight for their position. As Canada's largest IT consulting company, CGI is lacking many of Canada's best business practices for their employees.

Cons

I worked at CGI in both India and the USA and observed similar workplace culture concerns across both locations. The only real difference was HR—India HR felt more supportive, while my experience with USA HR was disappointing. My employment ended shortly after maternity leave due to an alleged “lack of projects,” which I experienced as a layoff. I also observed what appeared to be misuse of position by some leaders, including blurred professional boundaries, preferential treatment, and expectations that went beyond normal workplace roles—at times resembling personal-assistant-style demands rather than professional conduct. Surprisingly, I also noticed inconsistent “policies” applied differently to different individuals. In some cases, it felt like the rules changed depending on who you were. When leadership became aware that someone was related to another employee in the organization, it sometimes felt like that person was singled out or targeted rather than treated objectively. Overall, these practices—whether through inconsistent treatment, perceived power misuse, or favoritism—undermine trust, damage workplace culture, and raise serious concerns about fairness and professionalism.
