Pros

First of all I will say that if you are able to self manage and are confidant in your abilities, this is a great position. It is a sales position, which requires you to sell. I say this because there are some comments on here complaining about the low base salary, and while that is true, the commission you can earn will provide you a very good living, much better than most sales positions with a higher base salary. But as with all jobs, you need to put in the effort. As mentioned, you need to be able to manage yourself. This is true with any sales position. Having said that, you are not alone, you get excellent training, ongoing support and help to be successful. CFIB truly wants you to be successful. This position also provides you great work/life balance. It is also rewarding to know that what you do and who you represent is so vital to small business owners. As a previous small business owner myself, I can tell you that what CFIB does is incredibly important. This makes this position rewarding knowing you help so many people. CFIB treats it’s employees with respect and is open and honest in dealing with employees. After 3+ years, I am still very happy and enjoy my job every day.

Cons

None that I can think of. Some will complain about the feast or famine experience, but that is true with any sales position.

Thanks for these important comments. A District Manager position is not for everyone and you rightly note that those who do best are able to self-manage and put in the effort. While there is lots of support available from colleagues, working at CFIB provides a great deal of autonomy and flexibility. Those who do best in an environment with lots of structure and supervision are not always well suited to this role. I also agree with your comments about our mission. Those who are motivated by making a difference in our communities and for our country often find their job at CFIB to be incredibly rewarding. It is why, after 27 years at CFIB, I’m still excited to come to work everyday. Thanks again for writing – be sure to share any advice on how we can do better with me anytime!

Thanks for the positive review. No surprise, but I agree with you that we have a positive working environment and some incredible people working for the Federation. I just wrapped up 2 days hosting our new colleagues from across Canada in our national office in Toronto. It was great fun and left me very confident in the new crop of staff we are bringing in across the organization.

Pros

Work for a great cause

Pay structure is capped everywhere, you have to always be a top sales person or you will never get anywhere, the top or nothing to survive on, you will burn out

Thanks for the feedback. I’m pleased that you identified with our cause at CFIB. Small business owners have really struggled this past year and I have been so impressed with how our team has responded with advice and support. We’ve just completed Zoom meetings with our teams across most provinces, and staff are consistently reporting how proud they are to work for CFIB at this critical time. I’m sorry that it appears your pay expectations were not met. The District Manager job is not always an easy one and needs to be treated as a full-time role. While things were particularly challenging over the past year (due to the need to contact business owners virtually for several months), I am proud to report that nearly 15,000 small business owners made the decision to buy a paying membership during the pandemic. With the unprecedented awareness and interest in CFIB, this certainly helped us attract new members despite the challenging economic times. While serving our members is our main focus, our entire senior management team is committed to making CFIB a great place for staff to work and earn a good living. I believe we do a really solid job of that, but I am always looking for input from current (and former) staff along the way. Thanks for writing.
