Pros

First hand experience, make what you can make of it. Have to write 20 words, but can't think of many pros

Cons

The CEO hired me to start a new practice area. The vision was to build this practice through a lot of business development and client networking. Sounded all good. A few weeks after I started, he disappeared without any prior notice of his employees. Didn't show up for a month. I later found out that this was not the first time and it happens 2-3 times a year where he literally drops from the face of earth and no one knows what to do. To make it worse, he keeps not just his employees but more importantly his clients hanging. The other recruiters have to come up with lame excuses about his disappearance, very extreme at times, to the likes of that he has cancer or some chronic illness. Obviously you can't mention that your boss is a severe drug and alcohol addict. Also abusive, he would drop dirty comments to his female employees, highly explicit and sexual in nature. Not sure how his employees haven't sued him yet, maybe they have in past. It's a revolving door. He runs a sham business, and exploits his employees, both males and females. ZERO ethics. During my couple of months over there, closed searches and made the company money, more than paid for my draw there. After his second disappearance within 3 months, both 3+ weeks long (yes, no joke), he fires me over email. Because he didn't want to pat me what I was owed.

Pros

flexible/casual work environment, good pay, open-door, tons of research resources, you will learn fast The best aspect of this firm was the client interaction. Fairly early on, I was included in meetings and calls with clients who hired the firm to conduct interesting research. They had close relationships with some of the most prominent hedge funds and I learned a lot by doing. It's great for self-motivated people who can learn quickly and know how to conduct research. You really should know how to use Bloomberg and Excel well before coming here.

Cons

Unstructured, inconsistent work focus, career-path can be muddy There were some seriously super-smart people here who came from and return to the hedge fund world so coming out of a junior banking internship and as a recent grad from an Ivy league school, I'd expected a lot more interaction and coaching since I didn't know as much about the industry. I often felt like I was left to figure it out myself and there was little patience for anyone who wasn't proactive in learning what was needed on their own. They foster a win or die attitude (like their many of their clients) which is fine for seasoned folks but jr. hires need a bit more guidance.
