Pros
I recently transitioned out of Boston Strategic Partners after more than 5 years at the firm during which I worked with 10+ clients on many projects. If you want to become an excellent consultant in the healthcare space, BSP is a great place to do so. First and foremost the work is exciting. Every project is an opportunity to learn something new and positively impact a different aspect of the life science ecosystem. If your interest in consulting is to gain broad experience, you will have that opportunity here. The team is full of extremely bright team members who balance intellectual curiosity with well-developed project and time management skills to ensure results are delivered to clients in a timely fashion. These skills are well-developed because the firm believes in growth and development. It does not subscribe to a "cutthroat" culture that may be associated with consulting. All team members want everyone to succeed and this starts at the top. I had the opportunity over my tenure to work closely with the President on several projects. Comments suggesting he lacks intelligence are totally unfounded as the opposite is true and evident shortly after your first discussion with him. Beyond that, I think his overall care for each team member is overlooked. My impression of him is that a financially successful consulting firm is not sufficient for him to deem the company successful. He wants to help everyone at BSP develop into the best consultant they wish to be. Like any good teacher, he will challenge you to push beyond your comfort zone. He will give you the opportunities to grow and shine and trust that you will rise to the occasion. He will also be the team's most ardent defender if he feels that a project team is being taken advantage of by a client. I was fortunate that most clients during my tenure did not behave this way but in those rare instances, he is the first to act in the team's defense. BSP has several procedures in place to help promote a healthy work life balance and team camaraderie. I look back on my time fondly.
Cons
Consulting is challenging work and will involve longer hours than other career paths. As a completely virtual firm, even with the policies and procedures that have been instituted, each individual team member must also hold themselves accountable. If you are not internally motivated and driven to learn, then Boston Strategic Partners may not be the best fit for you.
