Pros

Great for new captains looking to get time on their license. If you're there for long enough, you can get checked off on numerous boats and get a lot of variety and experience.

Cons

Boats are overworked and maintenance is spread thin. A lot of maintenance that should get done, but never does, or it gets rushed and done improperly. There are plenty of shifts available in the summer, however in the winter most of the company shuts down and you will be scrambling to keep 30 hours of work each week. There's only one training captain, and he's overworked as well, so it can take months to get checked off on a boat. Pay isn't what it should be, especially for deckhands. It's hard to come down on someone when you know they're making minimum wage. Shifts are long and you have very little agency. It can be very difficult to convince management to investigate anything less than a serious problem with the boat. Avoid the water taxi fleet like the plague. I never worked for that department but everything I've heard sounds horrible.

Pros

Good people work here Working on the sea is nice Good resume builder

Cons

Us vs them attitude towards awful management Frequently verbally attacked by the public (or physically) because of poor MBTA transparency or policy Extremely below industry average pay (less than half of what MBTA bus drivers make) Management watching like hawks to write you up over things like forgetting a life jacket on a single trip out of the 30 you do all day Physical risk- it’s very easy to be injured here.
