Pros

- Possibly some of the best benefits in the area. No cost health insurance, 401k matching, employer HSA contributions, independent fitness and wellness benefits, 3 week starting vacation, Maternal and paternal leave - Culture is laid back, personal, and accepting. Company events are a blast. Smaller team events don't feel forced and are actually fun to hang out with coworkers. Lots of smaller unofficial groups to get involved with from rock climbing, running, biking, snowboarding, etc... Company even promotes lunch workouts and guided meditation. - Some amazing work comes from people that bring their A-game to the organization. Some individuals have lots of pride in their work and it shows - Top class facility with in house prototyping and testing capabilities. They invest in the equipment to let their teams shine - Lots of experience to be gained interacting with international teams, brand customers, and external vendors - Company consistently tries to hire from inside first, there are opportunities for workers to change groups and get into a new role which helps the limited verticality of promotions for most positions - There's a bar with several taps, a billiards table, ping pong table. Great spot to hang out with coworkers if you're in a group that has the time for those things. - Company is making a strong effort to reduce its effect on the environment through office initiatives (landfill, recycle, compost), electrical use, and in its products (shipping waste, bio-plastics, plastic recycling, etc...) -Really is overall a good place to work. All work places have their cons and this company is no exception. Some departments will be a breeze and a treat to work in. If you can avoid getting stressed out and enjoy the good aspects you'll have fun for a good amount of time. But the lack of upward mobility and the lack of diversity in day to day work will eventually leave you wanting to try something new. - Company has been a leader in the community regarding COVID safety measures. A culture of mutual respect means coworkers wear masks and respect personal boundaries. Main office has been mostly shutdown with workers that can work from home doing so. Lots of safety protocols in place for those going into the office.

Cons

- Pay can be 10-20% below the going rate for Denver area, though some of that gap is made up with bonus. The health benefits do help keep more of that money in your pocket, but salary will come in lower than expected, absolutely must negotiate prior to hire as there isn't opportunity to negotiate pay increases later - Pay transparency has decreased and there continues to be pay discrepancies based on gender and experience typically only revealed after employees leave. The company appears to be trying to address this - Diversity is a buzzword for the company but the company still feels like it lacks women and POC through much of the company., especially in the product team. The age of the company also is pretty centralized within an age group which can lead to a lack of experienced leadership in managerial levels, managers are often people who have come up through the company but not necessarily well suited to leadership. - Level of work intensity across the organization is very imbalanced with some departments pulling late nights and weekends while other departments clear out of the building by 3:30 in the afternoon. - Meetings, meetings, meetings, paperwork, emails, emails about meetings, meetings about emails. You'll look at your calendar and question when you're supposed to be doing actual work. - Bloated processes and short timelines results in high stress and burnout for some departments. Once you're through a milestone buckle up for the next intense work push. - Many groups within the company have little verticality to their structures. It means you can quickly run out of room to grow other than small jumps in pay - Manager path is the only way to achieve the higher pay grades, less room for specialized workers in top roles.

Pros

Working at BOA provides a genuine sense of connection and community with people who are passionate about making the best products possible for use in the great outdoors. You can always find someone to join in any endeavor, whether mountaineering, throwing pottery, or volunteering to build and deliver bicycles for children. I am always impressed by the exploits, and hearts, of coworkers. BOA is a business founded on solving problems, and as such is teeming with critical thinkers and problem solvers. Individuals are constantly striving to design, engineer, and test the best solutions to improve performance. My favorite thing about working for BOA is that this is not reserved solely for BOA applications in footwear. Folks are happy to lend a hand, an ear, a shoulder, or other knowledge if it means solving a problem or addressing an issue inside or outside of work. The talent and compassion inside these walls is profound.

Cons

Sure, BOA has its challenges. Leadership strives to improve the lives of the employees, and there is a pretty great "total compensation" package that includes salary, healthcare, bonuses, stock options, health and wellness gifts, and other benefits. The salary no longer feels competitive, but is likely lacking industry-wide. Overall, the balance seems to swing in favor of Director-level and above, which can be frustrating. Still, it is a great place to work, and I challenge you to find a better group of people.
