Pros

- Work is fascinating & challenging - Individual contributors are sharp, warm, & hard-working - Great workplace, offices are really nice, great location, strong tooling, wonderful IT/maint teams, etc. - Competitive pay & benefits

Cons

TLDR: leadership & employee resources don't have any accountability, so your time there depends on if you luckily end up with a good manager. I was there for about a year; it was great, I had a fantastic boss. Then a re-org moved me under someone with more company experience but less technical skill, which showed as they began micromanaging every issue and complaining when I took a single PTO day. I asked them to back off so I could focus and they retaliated by taking me off the 4th phase of a project (the first 3 went great). When I asked if I could shadow my replacement to learn, I was denied & a few weeks later I found out that my manager was telling others, including my peers, that I had made all sorts of mistakes on the 4th phase, which was impossible because I was removed. I spoke to my boss' manager about my concerns and things got worse. The next week my manager began drowning me with new administrative redundancies including a new rule that I complete two project charter docs for any task that took more than a day to complete (more than half my work). After explaining that my new workload caused me to regularly exceed 60hrs/week, I was told "go look at the scrum board, see who has less work, ask them for help." After only 3 months under the new manager I was put on a PIP for poor performance on a different project I was never informed I was apparently leading. I went back to my manager's leadership again to express my concerns but they never found time to connect. The PIP doc was just a few lines in an Excel sheet, all of which were inaccurate or unclear, including a section that stated I needed to improve my SQL and Excel skills, so I asked for clarity and was told that my SQL and Excel skills were actually fine (they refused to answer "so why was it on the PIP?"). My manager then asked me to move a due date for an external deliverable, which I did, and then they told their leadership I missed the date. I packaged all this up and shared it with my boss' leadership, who finally found time to meet, but they outright stated "we aren't going to litigate this" refusing to review the proof (emails & screenshots). I pointed out that my manager refused to be recorded, didn't have any email trail for my performance concerns, and refused to produce notes. They didn't care. I eventually went to an internal relations team and shared everything - after a few meetings I revealed that I had a panic attack and it was affecting my confidence and focus; my case was escalated to a senior manager who very quickly pushed the conversation toward an exit package. With the support of therapy and antidepressants, I decided it was a good idea to move on, we negotiated a total that I was happy with and left the company. If you get lucky and get a good manager (or one that likes you), you're golden, it's a great place to work, but it really is a coin-flip. If you get a bad one, they could be REALY bad, and senior leadership doesn't seem to want to fix it. I would definitely recommend people try working at BMO, but keep your resume/LinkedIn refreshed and don't let false narratives kill your confidence. Remember that if it happens to you then it only proves you're smarter, harder-working, and a better human being than the people doing it to you.
