Pros
I think other reviewers were confusing this with the residential real estate team. USAA Real Estate Company is the commercial real estate investment company, a subsidiary of USAA. The company has separate benefits and bonus, which overall for San Antonio are even better than the main USAA HQ. The company is small enough that mid-level individuals have access to execs more frequently. I'm giving 2 stars because of the total compensation package and ease of work.
Cons
I asked repeatedly for more responsibility and showed ways to add value. Although I got a top rating, and was told by multiple higher level managers that things were in the works, nothing happened. Management has a lack of management skills. They are all good with the technical skills needed to do their job, but are only in higher level positions because of length of service. There are few fresh ideas or faces. The company has become quite top heavy with titles, everyone there seems to be a director or more. Prior and subsequent to my employment there, I have worked for multiple companies and exposed on a daily basis to the upper management of external companies to my own. I can not think of a company that lacks the skills or leadership more than USAA Real Estate. If you look at the underlying fundamentals of the their business, the only thing making them successful is that they can bring USAA Bank's AAA rated credit to the table. This is how they close deals. They vastly error when underwriting a property and get a few big payoffs. Yes, they have done well, but take their leadership and mid-level managers to another commercial real estate company and in a short time they would fail.
