Valuable Learning Opportunities but Room for Improvement - GIS Analyst Aerial Data Service Employee Review

Pros

Opportunity to acquire advanced GIS experience such as data collection, photo interpretation, and remote sensing skills. Both ArcGIS Pro and FME (Safe Software) are heavily used so learning opportunities for both are available. The flexible work schedule was appreciated, and it provided a great environment for entry-level professionals to develop GIS expertise.

Cons

Compensation was below market standards, with limited raises or cost of living adjustments and bonuses or promotions were rare. These aspects can be demotivating for employees and hinder their professional growth and engagement. Hiring and training new employees is much more expensive than investing in your current staff. The company is understaffed, which has led to project delays and excessive overtime, resulting in burnout. This is reflected by the high turnover rate. There was a lack of investment in software and equipment upgrades, hindering productivity. Remote work was embraced post Covid, however the infrastructure to enable efficient and productive work from employees has been neglected. Recommendations and innovative ideas often went unheard or were dismissed. This lack of support for fresh ideas can stifle creativity and hinder progress. The company owner/president showed little interest in connecting with employees. Considering the small size of the company, it would have been beneficial to foster a deeper understanding of the hardworking and talented individuals contributing their skills and efforts.

Pros

You will enjoy the tacit autonomy afforded by do-nothing management that offloads their responsibilities onto subordinate staff and only chimes in to mandate overtime. You will never have to take time to redo your personal budget because raises and bonuses are nearly non-existent. You will never have to stress about getting that promotion because there are none to be given. The bathrooms are usually clean.

Cons

The company, by design, is kept below 50 employees to avoid federal mandates requiring family and medical leave, affirmative action compliance, EEO-1 reporting, ACA and WARN Act compliance. Workers are treated like subhuman batteries to be expended and discarded leading to wild turnover. You will be overworked and severely underpaid and nothing will ever be done to address it because young, naïve, and desperate batteries are always available to be hired, sold a lie, and expended like countless others before.
