Pros
The job is decent, typical warehouse work but in a very warm environment due to the cleancells. Had a guy faint in there and then fans were installed ever since. Still very warm. Very few work socials (summer and Christmas) but there is free food on occasion. A good first job as you’ll be learning as they do, so they probably won’t notice the mistakes you make. Consistent shift times, free pizza occasionally, has a radio, managers are fairly understanding about personal lives and if you need time off.
Cons
Strange culture in the workplace as there’s a glass office in the warehouse where all the office people work in much cozier and communal conditions. Eg, they had heaters when it was winter, there’s a bowl of treats they can help themselves to, etc. Made for an ‘us vs them’ kind of feeling. Didn’t help that labourers were majority of one demographic and office workers were a majority of the other… Management are wishy-washy. A bit avoidant of warehouse workers and have openly referred to warehouse workers as ‘minions’. Pay isn’t truly worth the amount of work you have to do. You’re working with dirty, moulded, broken glass. It took a VERY long time for any sort of health and safety to be enforced. Was completely normal to NOT wear gloves or any sort of ear + eye protection from the machinery or shattering glasses. Often see masses of electrical wires in puddles of water because there’s yet another leak. Freedoms get revoked, was allowed to go on your phone while you wait for work or use headphones to listen to music - no longer. Job is not very secure. Most staff have been made redundant or just asked not to return due to money issues. Often pay troubles and hours not calculated correctly, takes months to fix as they constantly tell you to “wait till next payday”. Very unrewarding and unforgiving work, no praise or recognition, low work standards, health risks, money + job insecurity.
