Pros

ELCO Mutual is a great company to work for, with a supportive team environment and positive workplace culture. Management is approachable, communication is clear, and employees are treated with respect. It’s a professional, well-run organization that values teamwork and quality work.

Cons

Some internal processes feel outdated and can make the workload heavier than it needs to be. With more modern systems and streamlined workflows, daily operations could be more efficient and manageable for employees.

Pros

Work schedule, location and size of the company is great. They buy lunch on Wednesdays for everyone in the office.

Cons

Our health insurance is TERRIBLE now. Through 2023 we had a Blue Cross HMO that was good until the company changed their company and forced everyone to change to a new PPO plan with some unknown company. The cost to see a doc has doubled. There is no longer a copay but now a huge deductible. The expensive manager's plan started getting money this year to cover about $3000 of their deductible, the employee plan gets zero so all our costs are now out of pocket. I've had to cancel my last appointment as I can't afford the $1000+ it would now cost me. Since last year the copay just to see the doc once a year has doubled. Most of us on the employee plan have spent more in the first 3 months this year than all of last year combined. If you have a family or kids, the cost is even greater! Management really gave us the short end of the stick this year when they pushed everyone on the new plan. We can no longer afford to see a doc with our insurance.

ELCO Mutual Life and Annuity Response

We appreciate the response concerning our new health insurance plan. These comments will assist us in better educating our staff. Our goal has always been to keep costs down for our staff. Staff pay 5% of their health premium vs officers who pay 15%. The comment about officers receiving $3,000 toward their deductible or that the staff is somehow supplementing the costs of the officer’s premiums is not true. Doctor visit co-pays have gone from $20 on the HMO to $30 on our PPO. I think there is a misunderstanding when it was mentioned that our new plan is from an unknown carrier. Our insurance cards mention the name of the TPA which may not have been explained well enough to our staff, I believe that is what was the unknown company that was mentioned. This plan uses the Aetna network which is considerably larger than our past HMO network. We did eliminate the HMO, so having a deductible is new for people that have not had a PPO in the past. The dramatically larger network of doctors and no longer needing referrals from a PCP are just a couple of the benefits of a PPO plan. Annual physicals have been free ever since the ACA was passed so I don’t understand why someone would feel as though they can’t go to their doctor. I sincerely hope that this employee will talk to the HR Dept. so that we can assist and answer any questions that he/she may have.
