Toxic and Oppressive Workplace

Pros

The pay is acceptable at best.

Cons

Employees feel mistreated, disrespected, and like they're walking on eggshells every day. I've never experienced a more hostile, toxic workplace. I believe you should avoid Creating Margin at all cost if you value your dignity and mental health.

I am very sorry to hear this feedback. I'm not sure who you are, but we've never had an active employee express their feelings in such stark terms. We offer a third party HR consultant to allow employees to safely be heard and to help resolve issues of this sort and it doesn't sound like that resource was used. In several recent cases (possibly during your employment here) we have happily granted PTO for mental health and wellness requests. We value each teammate as an individual and want to hear your concerns and stressors whenever they come up. It sounds like this animosity may be partly due to our decision to terminate employment, in which case the decision appears to have been the best for both parties. Still, it saddens me that you would harbor such negative feelings towards this venture. We haven't terminated anyone in eight months. Clearly you are still unhappy about your time here. We will work to do better for our current and future teammates by being more proactive about offering helpful resources. I sincerely wish you smoother sailing in your future endeavors. Thank you, - Matt Krebs

I am sorry to hear about your unhappiness during your employment here. As a company, we are working hard to set clear expectations for each hire and have well thought out, honest job responsibilities. While early stage startups do require everyone to "wear multiple hats", I admit that we have sometimes asked employees to flex into roles that may not have lined up with their experience or comfort zone. I have a "hard charging" mentality about work which has allowed me to maintain the business for over seven years. The next stage in our growth will be to balance that tendency with people skills- fostering their careers, creating a healthier culture, and narrowing each person's focus at any given time. One thing I've been committed to from the start is appropriate, sustainable work life balance, and I disagree that we over exert our team members. No employee is expected to regularly work over 40 hours a week, and in fact we encourage people to put in a full, productive 8 hour day and then head out and enjoy time with family. That said, occasionally a call or text outside of business hours may be necessary, and when the responsibilities of a project are not completed we may all have to work overtime to get the job done. Ideally, this means we can take off early here and there as a reward for the effort. As Founder I welcome these conversations with new hires and am committed to introspection and continuous improvement. I wish you the best in your career. - Matt Krebs
