Pros

I could not have asked for a better mission or more wonderful colleagues doing their best amidst constant transitions.

Cons

College Track, what a heartbreak about what the reality should have been. Nonprofit workers, listen: you cannot ever believe enough in a mission without also being able to believe in the integrity, accountability, and transparency of its leadership. It just won’t work. CT has the high turnover and pressure to “drink the kool-aid” about results that you often see in the tech sector, but the reality is that there is high turnover, constant program reconfiguration, and total comfort with the waste and disruption of entire teams leaving. CT has normalized these bizarre practices because it is a nonprofit co-founded and largely financed by a billionaire. They do not care about retaining their talent or perpetuating harmful practices within the culture. See also the reviews at XQ Institute for an eerily similar description of the bullying, dysfunction, and erratic decision-making. It comes straight from the top.

Pros

The sites work magic with the kids. They are amazing advoates and kids thrive with that direct attention in high school and check ins during college. The internship and externship opportunities for the students are amazing and will give them a great head start.

Cons

Senior management as a whole. It all stems from the top. Mgmt gets to change what they want, when they want. And you either get on board (even if they dont have reasoning for the change) or you will be asked to leave. Managers get to do what they want with very little to no oversight for anything they do. Including Taking off time frequently and randomly. Having staff summits or retreats at random points in the year. There are no 360 reviews so only top down which means while the down may be doing the gruling work, the top gets to both take credit and tell the down they arent doing it right. Went through at least one regorg per year (often 2). Contractors are hired for KEY elements to the program and are not vetted nor are managed by senior staff. Often creating a larger gap between staff and trust in management. Contractors often do not have the valuable historical context staff do thusly end up causing more issues than just letting staff take their time to roll out items to students. Zero training for management. Leaders are allowed to tell people what to do vs lead them. Lots of meeting pop ins from senior staff to "check" in while also not doing weekly 1:1s staff request for clarity. Remember its an at will job. They can and will change your title, pay, or employment based on their needs and not your actual value to students or staff.
