Two-faced leaders creating a culture of scapegoat

Pros

My peers were amazing and awesome to collaborate with to tackle initiatives and challenges.

Cons

At Clockwise, I truly thought I had found authentic leaders who led with empathy, colleagues who had your back every step of the way, and relationships I would have cherished even after my tenure. However, if Clockwise has taught me anything, it is to never fully trust anyone no matter how much of the world you think of them. It's when the times are tough, that people's true colors start to show. In hard economic times, businesses have to make tough decisions and I get that (not my first rodeo). But to not only have your tenure be cut short but also be scapegoated for the macro challenges that the company (like many other companies) was facing at the time, and be kicked while you're down is downright heartless. It's cruel when in a moment of vulnerability you share the soft skills you want to improve on during a developmental check-in, only for it to be used against you in evaluations. It's disappointing when you highlight a shortcoming in business-wide analytics in your retro, only for upper management to turn a blind eye, conveniently forget about it and tell you it's completely your fault for the business missing goals despite tough economic conditions. It's painful to hear when you try your absolute hardest to close the gap on goals, go the extra mile, and get recognized for it at the company all-hands only to be told on your way out that it just made your overall contributions a 'palatable loss'. It fills me with guilt when I take approved time off (submitted months in advance) to take care of immediate family abroad after COVID only to be told right before that "I'm taking a lot of time off" and be impacted the week I come back from leave. It left me in shock when only a month prior I was told I was doing a great job and to keep up the good work in reviews only for it to flip 180 degrees without any warning or notice and not be given a chance to have my say before being impacted. At the end of the day, don't fall for the facade of "authenticity", "empathy" and "transparency". None of this exists when times are tough and they will throw you under the bus, blindside you and make you the scapegoat.

Pros

I am quite happy at Clockwise. The company is inclusive and also not bro-y. We've got a lot of interesting people here, which I love about Clockwise. We're all so different and we all have a lot to contribute to the company, the culture, and the product. We're also remote first, we're flexible, and we respect work/life balance. (Though, I'll also add that I personally often end up working more than the usual 40 hours/week.) In the past, I'd start looking at other employers at the 2 year mark as the company changes and morphs into something I'm no longer interested in being a part of. But, I'm happy to say it's not the case with Clockwise and I hope to be here for at least a few more years.

Cons

Since Clockwise is small, opportunities for career growth seems to be a bit limited. Teams are small, which I personally love. However, I want to also move up, and I'm not sure what that looks like in my role, or if it's even possible at this stage. Also, while we're definitely inclusive, I feel we could work on being a little more diverse.
