Pros

Paid Training and Paid Time off. 401K Match

Cons

Company is concerned about one thing when it comes to their employees: "how much money can you make before you break". The effort-based performance metrics for this company change for the sales team on a weekly basis. Close to no support for regional offices. The company culture creates a power struggle between sales and operations. These tensions almost always end up hurting the customer in some way. Company preaches about their "97% on-time delivery", yet in my time with the company, we missed about half of our deliveries appointments any given week. This company wants to create the perception that they care about the longevity of their employees but once you're there for more than 6 months, you can see right through the fakeness.

It’s sales...

Pros

Co-workers were nice to work with.

Cons

Commission structure and ever changing goals whether you hit the numbers or not are made to keep the money at the top. PTO takes long to accrue. No one can really tell you how to sell all you are given are suggestions that may have worked for 1 customer. The way to survive here is to collect a lot of good accounts that have been passed down from people who have left the company.

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience at Choptank. We are sorry your training was not enough to help you succeed. This year we have revamped our sales training program and will continue to add depth to the program in the coming years to develop our reps into successful account executives that can close business with a variety of customers. Glad to hear that you enjoyed working with team members. We think the team is pretty great too. Best of luck in your next career!

Not the best company to work for

Pros

If you speak English and graduated high school, they will hire you. Pays better than working at a fast food restaurant.

Cons

Compensation could be a lot better to the employees compared to the revenue they bring in towards the company. They do not do much recognition for hard work. Most of the time they just tell you “thank you, keep up the hard work”. It’s depressing to see how much money you bring in compared to what you are given for hard work. There does not seem like there are many paths for advancement or promotions. Many management positions are hired externally.

Ride the wave

Pros

Fair training. Decent comradery. You can make decent money when you've got a consistant mid-size customer or two. Lose one or both at the wrong time and you're in for a world of hurt!

Cons

Upper management adapts poorly. Panic overtakes them whenever the market shifts, which is fairly often. Sales message changes with the wind. No consistancy. When things inevitably dip the answer is always to apply pressure by threatening to discontinue their weekly incentives program and micromanaging. They oversell the earning potential as the industry is too unstable to provide any real long-term stability, at least for sales reps outside of "enterprise accounts." Unrealistic sales ramp and bogus quarterly bonus system that becomes increasingly harder to climb the further along you go. As mentioned before, freight is a tough industry to manage to stay ahead in... Choptank doesn't make it any easier.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback for our team. As with any industry that exists in a dynamic market such as ours it can certainly feel like you are riding a wave. Our reps and AEs with 3-6 years of tenure averaged $85k last year. You are 100% correct that financial results may vary if you lose a large customer which is why the company pushes reps very hard on the metrics and habits that will ensure you gain new clients and insulate yourself from the negative impact of losing a valued customer. Your manager should be holding their team accountable during good times and bad. If that message is inconsistent, your frustration is understandable. Since 2009 we have offered an increasingly generous base salary plus an incentive package that we feel is fair. However, if you feel your goals are unrealistic, I strongly urge you to reach out to your manager and discuss your concerns and what you feel is more in line with your expectations. We are here to make you successful and while coaching is sometimes difficult to hear, it is intended to help you to improve and become as successful as you wish to be. I hope you stick with it.

Pros

The job itself brings out the talent in yourself, its very demanding and you have to be very self driven, if you have those keys you might make it there. Their are some really smart people in that building, just not enough. Good Health plan. Great transitional place to work, I would attempt to make it long term, I don't believe in building someone else's dream will mine gets further away.

Cons

Even if you're one of the best in the building, if you're not "gung-ho" Choptank life, you will never find yourself in the inner circle (where you need to be to really develop a good career). They ask your opinions to improve things but then grill you for voicing that opinion. My focus on this portion is simple, you can go in there and make the company as much money as you possibly can, if you run even slightly against the grain you will never feel valued. Simple thank you's and awards are not what Sales people look for. Awards and Thanks do not pay the bills, while they offer competitive pay, be honest, you're on the eastern shore MD. There isn't a lot to compete with. Their Comp plan was just revised and while i see both sides of it, my comp was cut 47%. Keep in mind the plan or "dream" they sell you on the front end is always subject to change so you never really know what you will end up with, even if you work through the nights, show up early and on the weekends, dedication and hard work will not pay off when the company changes their plans to improve themselves and those in the inner circles. Mid management is more like micromanagement, what i would call mid level managers, they have something to prove to continue their career and get promoted, however they do not care who they off or ruin along the way. Life/Work balance is non existent, i don't think this is the companies fault its just the line of work. You never actually check out of that place, and if you go on a vacation, you might as well call that week a loss to you. BIGGEST KEY - No matter what you do, how hard you work, how great you are, the outcome goes into several others hands to see it through, your great work will not always reflect you in that light when others fall short. When others fall short, there is no recourse for them. If they fall out of SOP it does not matter some how it will be your fault and it was for you to manage.
