Pros

Work remotely. Good salary. Inspiring and fulfilling mission. Many kind, professional, smart, and driven people at this company, including Director-level employees.

Cons

In my honest opinion and experience, the CEO has an ego that manifests itself through demeaning people with sharp comments and micromanaging/hovering. I don't expect perfection from any executive of any company. Problems are everywhere you go. However, I came to the conclusion that the CEO at CareMessage is not a person that I personally wanted to work for, no matter what other perks, pay, or other great leaders I had by working here. I hope this review will encourage the change that I definitely know is possible and that I believe others in the organization want to see.

CareMessage Response

Thanks for your input. Since this review personally calls me out, I would like to respond directly. First, it is clear that you did not report to me during your time at CareMessage as I have never had a single person voluntarily depart my leadership team since it was formulated in 2016. This makes it difficult for me to comment on any single interaction we may have had in passing. Given this, I am forced to conclude that your criticism of me stems from either your own version of the “worst possible” outcomes of the events or hearsay or both. It’s simply not worth responding to vacuous and ill-informed opinions. I would encourage any prospective employees reading this to talk directly to current employees of the company, especially individuals that have reported to me and know who I am as a person and a leader. It’s very easy to share unwarranted and unsubstantiated opinions, especially when hiding behind an alias. It’s much harder to actually build a real organization with the right foundation and a real commitment to continuous improvement. In addition, because we’ve chosen to invest all of our resources into building a great product and growing our impact, we often don’t have the time to respond to everything that’s posted by former employees that were either let go because of performance issues or who did not agree with our vision for the company. Going forward, we’ll be a lot more proactive in sharing our truth, because it’s clear that there are several of you out there who are getting dissuaded from joining our important mission because of these types of unsubstantiated claims.

I was made to blame myself for issues amplified by a toxic work environment

Pros

The company's mission is meaningful and rewarding, and seeing the positive impact that your work makes for those in need is a great feeling. The salary is also great, particularly for a nonprofit.

Cons

I spoke highly of this company for a long time, but after moving to a new company I've realized how toxic the work environment at CareMessage was. A prominent member of the leadership team had harassed me and made me feel worthless during my time there, but I blamed myself due to personal struggles that I now realize hadn't caused problems at any past job. After leaving, I learned that not only was I not the only one, but that member of leadership genuinely believes that happy work environments lead to poor performance. The rest of leadership does not make any effort to step in and put a stop to the treatment. There is also very little interaction with the team and virtually no opportunity to get to know each other, which is emotionally draining and makes work feel lonely and disconnected. Combine that with often unprofessional asynchronous communication with leadership, and it's easy to end up in a headspace where you feel like you don't deserve to connect with members of your team or be treated with respect. The company leadership is inexperienced, and it shows.

Pros

Flexible work hours, Decsent pay, Chance to work with those who need it most. There are great people here but they are not in charge!

Cons

When I first looked into this company I was excited about making a difference in underserved communities. So I looked past the reviews here from Former employees. It did not take long to find out that every word was true. After a legnthy interview process that results in you leaving a stable enviorment to come to a very unstable one where you are seeing employees leave one after the other all saying it is because of the CEO who will not even allow the Managers to do their job and every word is negative. ( Almost like a child emporer who bullies because there is no oversite!) I found it true that the mission to help the underserved is a Facade when you can not even show common respect for those who are employed by you. I am not sure if there is a board are any oversite but the amount of turnover has to be a concern to someone! At least do a Parting Interview? To those reading this, make sure you read all the comments from the Former employees? Not everyone is posting because they are disgruntle and current employees are too afraid to address any real issues on a platform like this!
