Pros

The union is supportive and will fight for you if you choose a good union representative.

Cons

You will have a caseload of over 100 patients which you will see monthly. These patients are low-income and severely mentally ill (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, etc). There is no therapeutic training on how to provide therapy to the patients. No therapeutic modalities are taught. The clinic's sole focus is numbers. You must see 35-40 patients a week. If you fail to meet this number you will be written up as incompetent. The management style is abusive, punitive, and aggressive. The director has favorites, but is disrespectful towards everyone. If she wants you to leave the position she will micro-manage every single action you perform in a daily basis and write you up. She will make your life miserable. This is a caseload that can not be maintained. You are not just responsible for therapy, but all treatment plans, outreach, providing resources, managing patients care while inpatient, and collaborating with outside providers. You will be beyond burnt out. This is a union position, and that is the only positive thing. You will need the union because the director will try to fire you, will insult you, and belittle you. Please don't work here. If you do, please fight for your rights with the union.

Pros

The work environment is a diverse multicultural environment, which is always a positive. 1199 Union, Pension, Amazing Health Benefits, PTO, Unlimited Overtime. After a year, you can use the Union to transfer into another department.

Cons

You’re expected to do overtime 2-3 times per week every single week. That is beyond unreasonable and asinine. This leads to high stress and quick burnout. No other security job that I’ve worked in the past required every single officer to do multiple 16 hour shifts a week. On top of the crazy mandations, you will be hands on with aggressive psychiatric patients, or homeless people who refuse to leave the premises almost everyday. As with any other hospital, the medical staff; particularly the nurses and doctors will blame security for any and everything, and you will receive very little to no support from upper management.
